Master of Arts in Business Economics (MABE)

The Master of Arts (MA) program in Business Economics applies economic principles to business problems, strategic planning, international trade and finance and the problems of macroeconomic policy making.

This degree is especially attractive to those wishing to prepare themselves for careers as professional economists in the private or public sectors. Graduates may pursue careers specializing in economic forecasting, economic policy analysis, industry and market studies, financial markets and institutions, strategic planning and public policy.

Graduates of the program are qualified to pursue doctoral studies. A major strength of the program is that it combines a specific focus on business economics with training in economic theory, quantitative methods and applied research.

The Canadian Association for Business Economics (CABE), with a membership of over 1,000 professional economists across Canada, has enthusiastically endorsed the objectives of the program, provided advice on the curriculum and confirmed the need for economics graduates with the skills this program develops.

Noteworthy features of the curriculum includes its focus on the preparation, conduct and presentation of empirical research as well as written and oral communication of economics. The development and practice of presentation skills are also emphasized.

Students are permitted to enroll in up to two (2) MBA courses as electives within the program. The interdisciplinary nature of the program is facilitated by the Departments of Business Administration and Economics being located within the same faculty. This administrative arrangement encourages and fosters interdisciplinary teaching and research and greatly enhances the readiness of our students for careers as professional economists.

Our graduates have earned employment in a wide variety of private and public sector enterprises, including financial institutions, consulting firms, investment firms and government departments.

Admission Requirements

In order to be admitted to the master's program, a student must meet the general admission requirements of the university. Applicants are expected to have an equivalent to an honours degree in economics with a minimum of second class honours or B standing. They are expected to have completed at least one one-term undergraduate course in each of calculus and econometrics (focussing on regression analysis), as well as two one-term courses in each of intermediate microeconomic theory and intermediate macroeconomic theory. Applicants with inadequate preparation in any of these areas will normally be required to complete additional undergraduate courses before they are admitted to the master's program.

An honours graduate in a program other than economics or general degree graduates may be admitted if evidence justifying admission is offered; however, a program of appropriate preparatory studies (qualifying year) will be required of such applicants. A student who has successfully completed the qualifying year with a minimum of B standing may apply for admission to the master's program.

Application Deadlines

Applicants are encouraged to apply by January 15th for first consideration.  This deadline also applies to applicants wishing to be considered for a WLU Graduate Scholarship and a Teaching Assistantship.

Program length and Co-operative education option

The program without the co-operative education component is 12 months (3 consecutive terms) in length.  Some students apply and are accepted to the co-operative education stream of the program.  Two terms of classes are followed by either a 4-month or 8-month work term.  The length of the work experience depends on student preferences and the availability of suitable employment.  A student returns after the work period for the final term of the program on campus.
