Dr. Arnold Wellwood

Dr. Wellwood was the second Biology faculty member in the Department. He came to Laurier from the University of Guelph where his area of expertise was the genetics of tomatoes. He established a genetics program at Laurier where he continued his interest in tomato genetics. He also had an interest in the wild plants of Ontario and associated with this interest he started a plant taxonomy course and, along with Dr. MacLulich, the Laurier Herbarium, which also has attracted many outside researchers.  The taxonomy course was popular not only with our students, but also with students from our neighbouring university and members of the Ministry of Natural Resources.

His most significant contribution while at Laurier was his study of the flora of Perth County. His multiyear study resulted in a complete enumeration of the plantsí species occurring in Perth County and provided important background for those interested in the flora of Ontario. This work also resulted in a publication describing a record of a plant new to the province.
