The international facts on safe water and sanitation are startling. More than 1 billion people around the world are without access to safe drinking water and more than 2 billion people have no access to sanitation facilities. According to UNICEF, each year more than 2 million people, mostly children, die from problems associated with the lack of water and sanitation. These figures are even more dramatic when you realize that approximately 6,000 children die every day from diseases related to the lack of safe drinking water, inadequate sanitation and poor hygiene. For over 10 years, the students in the Department of Sociology have done their part in helping to address these issues by raising funds for the Ottawa based WaterCan.

In the Winter Term of 2002, the students of SY203C, Sociological Theory, and SY311, Sociology of Religion, accepted the challenge of Dr. Richard Christy to raise money for WaterCan. This was the beginning of an annual fund campaign by his sociology classes. To date Dr. Christy’s classes have raised over $25,788.00 which CEDA matches three dollars for every one dollar. These funds have been combined with contributions from other university chapters in Canada to provide water and sanitation facilities for primary schools in Ethiopia, Uganda, and Kenya through the efforts of WaterCan.

During the 2013-2014 academic year with the leadership of several students in SY 203, SY316 and SY409, Sociology students raised $1,697 for WaterCan .

WaterCan@Universities Chapter of the Year 2013. In recognition of the university chapter that exhibits great innovation, creativity and spirit while contributing to WaterCan’s work.
