Normally, the Graduate Student Appeals Committee (GSAC) is the first level of appeal for graduate students of decisions that affect their academic standing and the Senate Appeals Committee SAC is the second and final level of appeal (there are different procedures in matters concerning academic misconduct; see WLU policy 12.2: Student Code of Conduct and Discipline). The Petitions Policy for Graduate Students is found in the Graduate Calendar.

Two forms are most frequently used for petitions. The Petition for Extension for Complete Coursework form is used only when extra time is required to complete coursework. Most other requests require the Petition to Graduate Student Appeals Committee form.

Please read the instructions on the forms carefully.  A letter providing information regarding the request is usually required in addition to the completed form.

The following deadlines apply to student petitions:

  • Students wishing to appeal an academic decision must do so within six (6) weeks of the date of receiving the decision.
  • Changes to registration status (e.g., including full/part-time, requests for leaves of absence) or extensions of degree time limits must be submitted six (6) weeks prior to the start of the applicable term or expiration of degree     time limits.
  • Appeals submitted to the Office of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies will be heard within six (6) weeks of the filing of the appeal.

Note that there are separate forms for:
a) Extended absence from campus while registered full time
b) Withdrawal from the University
