Welcome to the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. In the past 50 years, concepts and methodologies in Chemical Sciences have experienced a revolutionary change towards interdisciplinary connections with other disciplines including physics, biology, health and environmental sciences and engineering. In the past decade our Department has developed to a medium-sized vibrant unit with strong emphasis on interdisciplinary undergraduate and graduate education and research in chemistry and biochemistry. Our Department has a long tradition of excellence in undergraduate education, which is currently augmented by master's and doctoral programs. We offer a broad range of undergraduate and graduate courses, and there are many opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students to be involved in cutting-edge research in all traditional and modern areas of chemistry and biochemistry, such as organic and organometallic synthesis, environmental chemistry, nanochemistry, computational chemistry, biochemistry of health and disease, enzyme chemistry, structural biology and biophysics. The Department is also actively involved in innovative research and practice in undergraduate chemistry and biochemistry education.
Our Department enjoys a close interaction between faculty, staff and students. Chemistry and Biochemistry faculty are internationally recognized for their research, and some are multiple award winners for their excellence in teaching and development of novel teaching methods. We are specially privileged with our experienced and dedicated administrative, instructional and technical staff, who are instrumental in maintaining the high educational standards of our Department. We consider students as the most inspiring component and the main driving force for education and research. Throughout their studies, undergraduate and graduate students are involved in many teaching and research activities, as teaching and research assistants, and have representation in the departmental meetings. The Chemistry and Biochemistry Department has a strong infrastructure and state-of-the-art equipment for research, and well-equipped research and teaching laboratories.
In addition to research-intensive graduate programs, our Department provides ample opportunities for undergraduate students to get involved in research. Two courses (CH490 and CH495) allow the students to acquire research experience under the direct supervision of a faculty member. There are also several summer studentships available that allows students to work as research assistants in our various research laboratories. We are proud of the fact that many of our undergraduate students, who participated in challenging research projects, have been co-authors on research articles in high-impact international journals in chemistry and biochemistry.
I would like to invite you to search the Department page for more information about our undergraduate programs in chemistry and biochemistry and biotechnology, as well as our M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs. By joining us in the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department, you will enjoy a rigorous in-depth education in a supportive environment that provides you with the knowledge and experience necessary for a successful career in research, academia, industry or other related areas.
