Applying for Admission & Financial Assistance

Applying for Admission

In order to be admitted to the master’s program, a student must meet the general admission requirements of the university.

Applicants are expected to have an Honours BA with a major in English or an equivalent degree. A final year average of B+ is usually required, along with a cumulative average of at least B+ in all English courses.

Applications are reviewed by the Graduate Program Committee, which considers all prior university grades, a statement of research interests, a writing sample, and letters of reference.

Financial Assistance

Students are expected to apply for any financial awards for which they are eligible. Consequently, some students may enter the MA program with a SSHRC or OGS award. Students who enter the program with an external award are eligible for an incentive scholarship.

Financial support for MA in English students is available from several sources including:

•    Assistantships for the fall and winter term are available to all full-time students.
•    WLU Graduate Scholarships, awarded on a competitive basis to full-time graduate students who achieve high academic standing.  These scholarships are tenable for study at Laurier while enrolled as a full-time student.
•    Ontario Graduate Scholarships, subject to provincial funding levels. These are competitive awards for which all students seeking graduate admissions should apply. Awards are based on merit.
•    SSHRC CGS MA Scholarships. These scholarships are awarded based on merit, and are subject to federal funding levels. These competitive awards should be considered as a potential source of funding for all students seeking graduate admissions.

Information about graduate awards is available from the WLU Graduate Studies website.
