Dear Alumni and Friends

Its been a while since youve received a Connections newsletter from the Faculty of Social Work. It has been a year filled with changes, including a new Acting Dean (see below for an introduction of Susan Cadell) and a new Coordinator, Professional Development and Alumni Relations.

Id like to take few minutes to introduce myself. I completed my BA (Honours) in sociology from McMaster University in 1996 and then did a one year post-degree diploma in journalism at Conestoga College. My career from that point has been in the field of marketing communications, including five years at The Economical Insurance Group and two-and-a-half years at Research in Motion. I joined the Faculty of Social Work in December and have been warmly welcomed by faculty, staff, alumni and community members.

Ive had an opportunity to connect with a few of you either in person or through email over the past few months and Im looking forward to meeting many more of our alumni at various Faculty of Social Work workshops and events.

Professional Development Program

While my role involves a variety of responsibilities, my primary focus at least in the short term will be on growing and developing the Faculty of Social Works Professional Development program (formerly called Continuing Education). Ive started by taking a look at whats currently available in terms of training and education and whats needed in the social services sector. Id like to thank everyone who completed the Professional Development survey we distributed in February. The feedback and suggestions we received were fantastic and will be used in developing new programs. A summary of the survey results will be made available to you in the next few weeks. Weve also created an Advisory Committee, consisting of faculty, staff, alumni and an OASW representative, to help guide and direct the program.

Over the next year well have a variety of new seminars, programs and workshops available to help keep you current in your career. Well do our best to make sure our alumni hear about what were doing but please check out website regularly for updates (

Congratulations to 2010 Graduates

On another note the 2010 graduating class is preparing for spring convocation on June 7. Wed like to congratulate them on their success and welcome them as new Faculty of Social Work alumni.

Wed Love to Hear from You
