Volunteer for Research

Have you, or someone you know, been diagnosed with a movement disorder (such as Parkinson's disease)? If so, please contact MDRC at 519-884-0710 ext 3924 or e-mail  You may be eligible to be a volunteer in research projects.  Unfortunately there may be a waiting list for your initial assessment, but we will try to contact you as soon as possible.

Once you are "on the database" (following the initial assessment), you may be called by student researchers.  Research studies may require you to come to MDRC for one time for one hour or it may require as many as three times per week for 12 weeks plus pre and post assessments.  As a volunteer, you may accept or decline a study at any time.

If you do not have a movement disorder, you may still want to contribute to research.  Students often require people without a diagnosis to come in and do the same tests as the others.  We need a variety of people on the contact list so they can match age and gender which is important in solid research.

During testing, volunteers are often needed to assist with monitoring tests, helping the participant feel safe and supported no matter what the task may be.  This is a great way to get practical experience as well as get required hours for courses and graduation.

Financial Assistance

Maybe you are not in a position to volunteer for studies - you work full-time or you live far away.  You might decide to assist financially.  Your donations, when designated directly to MDRC, will go towards equipment for research, hiring graduate students to conduct research and the overall operations of MDRC.  MDRC not only collects data from people but gives back to participants what they learn about symptoms and how to deal with this debilitating disease on a daily basis.  Participants and family members feel supported, knowing that someone understands what they are going through.

To make a contribution,  go online to and under "Designation" select "Sunlife Financial MDRC".  You may also mail a cheque to The Sun Life Financial Movement Disorders Research and Rehabilitation Centre (MDRC)", Wilfrid Laurier University, 75 University Ave W, Waterloo, ON  N2L 3C5
