Katherine Chan - MSc (completed April 2013)

MSc. Began Sept. 2010

I completed a HBSc at the University of Toronto in Mississauga specializing in Biology. It was an environmental toxicology course that sparked my interest in the field of aquatic toxicology and protection. I decided to pursue a graduate degree in integrative biology at Wilfrid Laurier University (WLU). Now at WLU, I work under the supervision of Jim McGeer working with inverebrates.

My research relates to recovering lakes in the Sudbury region damaged by smelting factories around the area. My project consists of studying the influences of water hardness and natural organic matter (NOM) on the toxic effects of nickel with Hyalella azteca. This integrates concepts of the biotic ligand model (BLM) and also recovery rates, if any, on damaged aquatic ecosystems.
