Myrna was born and raised in Waterloo County. After earning her nursing degree and graduating from Toronto General Hospital in 1972, Myrna began her career as Director of Nursing and later a licensed, long term care administrator.
Bob and Myrna were married in 1972 and in 1979, the couple started successful businesses in Dallas, Texas. They have four children and one grandchild.
Myrna opened her first nursing and retirement center in Canada in 1978 and in Texas in 1979. She later moved to Texas in 1985 and subsequently grew the peopleCare Heritage Company into a 13-center group of deluxe facilities. She sold the company in 1994 to pursue other professional and community interests.
Myrna also wrote a weekly syndicated, question/answer newspaper column entitled “On Aging” for community newspapers and served as a delegate on the Texas State Debate on Health Care.
In order to continue assisting senior citizens, Myrna founded and is currently President of the Schlegel Horizon Foundation, which is dedicated to philanthropy in health care, education, and the arts.
Myrna is also former Chair of Board of Directors for the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and currently serves on the Executive Board. She has also served as President of AWARE and was on the National Alzheimer’s Board as well as the The Blanchette Rockefeller Neurosciences Institute for Research and Development. Myrna currently serves on the Foundation Board for The Family Place and the Advisory Board for the Crystal Charity Ball.
