Bob Schlegel, '72

Founder, Pavestone Company, Honorary Cabinet Member

Robert Schlegel graduated from Laurier’s School of Business & Economics 1972 with a BA in Economics. He received his Chartered Accountant designation in 1975 while working at Peat, Marwick & Mitchell (now KPMG).

Bob and Myrna were married in the chapel of the Waterloo Lutheran Seminary in 1972 and have four children and one grandchild, all of whom continue to be the pride and joy of their life. Bob considers his greatest honor was being recognized, in 2002, as Dallas' Father of the Year.'

In 1979, the couple started businesses in Dallas, Texas where they built successful companies including Pavestone Company, L.P., Bedrock Freight Brokering and peopleCare, a nursing retirement group, which was sold in 1994.

Bob Schlegel's numerous awards and honors include receiving the Ernst and Young 'Entrepreneur of the Year' Award, the Humanitarian Award from the National Research and Medical Center, The Tom Landry Award for Excellence and Volunteerism and the Horatio Alger Award in 2008 amongst many others.

Bob serves on the Salvation Army Branch, SIFE and the SMU Cox School of Business (Students in Free Enterprise). Bob also is a member of Tiger 21 and W.P.O on which he was a past chairman. The Schlegel School of Entrepreneurship was named after Bob and he also served on the board.

Bob and son Kirby (MBA ’03) are previous owners of the Texas Tornado ‘Junior A’, NHL, Hockey Club. In 2004, they also purchased the American Hockey League franchise, the Iowa Stars. The team began play in October 2005 with the opening of the new 14,000-seat Des Moines, Iowa, Arena. In 2006, they also purchased the AAA Baseball team, the Tacoma Rainiers who play in Tacoma, Washington and are affiliated with the MLB team the Marlins.
