Wilfrid Laurier University is developing a set of sustainability design standards
for major construction projects that will enable the University to work towards achieving LEED certification.

Laurier has one certified LEED building, the Research and Academic Centre (RAC) and has 2 planned major constructions that will be LEED Certified. Laurier's new Sustainable Design Guidelines and Sustainability Action Plan mandate that all new buildings follow LEED protocol. Laurier is currently working on creating Operational Guidelines that will ensure buildings are maintained with energy efficiency in mind.

Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) is a third-party, green certification system that encourages innovative strategies that minimize the quantity of resources and materials, as well as the use of water and energy. LEED takes the following topics into consideration:

Sustainable Sites
Site selected in a high density area to avoid urban sprawl, access to public transportation, 4 carpool parking spots, white roof to reduce the heat island effect, bike storage, access to change rooms at Wilkes House, 20% of site maintained as open space.

Water Efficiency
Reduce potable water consumption for irrigation by 50%, reduce indoor water consumption through the installation of low flow toilets, urinals, and faucets.

Energy and Atmosphere
Reduce energy consumption, proper HVAC commissioning, eliminate CFCs, HCFCs and halons.

Materials and Resources
Recycle construction waste, use of regional materials and recycled content materials in building construction, provide separation, collection and storage of different recycling materials.

Indoor Environmental Quality
Natural daylight, low emitting materials (adhesives, sealants, paints, coatings, carpets, wood and agrifiber), carbon dioxide monitoring, indoor air quality management during construction.

Innovation and Design
Educational signage, transportation plan, and green housekeeping program.
