Laurier is committed to reducing energy consumption and the use of fossil fuels.

The rate of global energy consumption has a serious negative impact on the environment, largely due to the fact that the source of most energy is derived from non-sustainable practices, such as the burning of fossil fuels, coal, natural gas, and nuclear power. Methods of producing sustainable energy, such as solar power and wind turbines are beginning to emerge and are progressively becoming more energy efficient. The Province of Ontario has a plan to eliminate the use of coal by 2025.

Energy Management Plan

In December 2009, the University outlined its aspirations to become a leader in energy use by developing an Energy Management Plan. The Plan outlines goals, utility monitoring, energy management, renewable energy, and related incentive programs in order to benefit the University both financially and environmentally. The plan is already underway and all of Laurier's buildings have been submetered with electrical meters, with water and natural gas meters to be installed by December. Energy Conservation Awareness Plan

In 2009, Laurier contracted eSolutions to develop an Energy Conservation Awareness Plan. The development of the plan included interviews, focus groups and online surveys with faculty, staff and students at Brantford and Waterloo campuses. The now completed plan outlines tools to encourage energy conservation such as commitments or pledges, prompts, developing norms, regular communication to ensure successful messaging, incentives and improving convenience. It also recommends steps for program design including branding and messaging, campaigns, education, involvement and evaluation. Energy Efficiency

Departments across Laurier are using energy efficient products:

  • Laurierís departmental multi-function printers and copiers are energy star rated.
  • Physical Resources uses T5 and T8 compact fluorescent lights.
  • Information Technology Services purchases EPEAT (Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool) computer.

Wilfrid Laurier Energy Dashboard

Laurier's energy dashboard virtually displays real-time data of energy consumption for every building, and features competition modules to encourage conservation between buildings. The dashboard also allows users to analyze data for troubleshooting in addition to highlighting our campus green features, providing green tips, weather, and discussion forums.

Information Technology

Laurierís data cente hosts the online infrastructure of the University and has been restructured in order to be more energy efficient. This reorganization relies on the technology of cloud computing, which allows for multiple servers to be virtualized on one server, and share common resources, software, and information. By using fewer servers, there are substantial direct energy savings and there is also a large benefit of reduced cooling costs, as these fewer and newer servers create much less heat than the servers that they will be displacing.

The Ministry of Environment mandates that institutions post data on Greenhouse Gas Emissions in terms of energy and natural gas expended. Please follow the link for Laurier's report.
