Roly Webster, Staff/Alumnus

Roly Webster (BA ’95), Laurier’s associate director: alumni relations, will work at the United Way of Kitchener Waterloo and Area as a sponsored employee September 9 to December 17, 2010.

As United Way’s associate campaign director, Webster will manage a team of five other sponsored employees, and help develop the organization’s strategies for the recruitment and retention of senior volunteers. He will also strive to improve United Way’s relationship with its individual donors and build advocacy with corporate donors.

“Although we will lose Roly’s considerable talent for a period, this is a wonderful opportunity for him,” said Rob Donelson, vice-president: alumni and development. “Roly’s involvement with United Way embraces Laurier’s focus on inspiring lives of leadership and purpose. No doubt, his experience gained will enrich our program upon his return.”

Webster met Jan Varner, the CEO of the United Way of Kitchener Waterloo and Area, at a summer staff retreat. After speaking with Varner, who is a Laurier alumna (BBA ’80, MBA ’94) and part-time lecturer, Webster was inspired to volunteer with the organization.

His drive resurrected Laurier’s sponsored employee program, and Webster is pleased he can dedicate his full time to the United Way. He said he is looking forward to “jumping in with both feet” for a few months to get strategies into place, and then plans to volunteer part-time when the term is over.

“I am thrilled Laurier is both willing to support my professional development and help community agencies by funding this position,” said Webster.
