Faculty of Science Deferred FINAL Examination Request
Information for Faculty of Science students about deferred FINAL examination requests
NOTE: This information does not apply to midterm examinations. You must contact your instructor if you have a request to defer a mid-term examination.
FINAL examinations are a mandatory part of most courses. Students are expected to write the final examination for a course as scheduled by the Examinations Office. Should a student: 1) not be available to write the examination at the scheduled time due to documented extenuating circumstances, or 2) miss a final examination, the student must appeal for deferred examination privileges.
For courses offered by departments in the Faculty of Science (Course codes: AS, BI, CH, CP, HE, HN, KP, MA, PC, PS, SC) a student must submit an appeal for a deferred examination as soon as possible but not later than three (3) business days AFTER the scheduled date of the examination for unforeseen circumstances. The request forms for a deferred final examination are available on-line (via link below). The Deferred Final Examination Request form will be automatically sent to the Faculty of Science Associate Dean: Student Services. A copy will be sent to the course instructor. To facilitate the processing of the deferred examination request, it is necessary that extenuating circumstances and all related details be included, and that supporting documentation be presented (where applicable). The documentation should be submitted no later than five (5) business days AFTER completing the online form. Failure to provide the supporting documentation in a timely manner may result in the appeal being closed. A final decision will not be made until original supporting documentation is received.
If you are submitting a request to defer one examination, the original supporting documentation must be given to the instructor of the course you wish to defer. If you are submitting a request to defer multiple examinations, the original supporting documentation must be given to the Faculty of Science Associate Dean: Student Services office (N1048).
If you have a personal crisis or if you are seriously ill, where medical attention is needed, contact a roommate, Laurier Residence Don, friend, or family member to aid you. For all deferral requests based on medical grounds, students should make it their first priority to visit the Student Wellness Centre, their family physician, or a walk-in clinic (as appropriate) to be examined by a physician and obtain medical documentation to support their appeal. Note that the Student Wellness Centre received notification from Grand River Hospital that emergency room physicians will no longer provide “exam exempting documentation” to students (effective Fall 2015). This includes any verification of illness forms for students seen in the emergency room, including students seen by the nurse practitioner.
For minor illness, please review the Faculty of Science Guidelines for Deferred Final Examination Requests Made on Medical Grounds.
University regulations stipulate that a final examination for any course cannot be deferred more than twice. Students may receive a maximum of five examination deferrals during the completion of their degree.
If you have a general question regarding the deferral process, email: email@example.com.
Deferred Examination Request Form: Once you have read and understood the procedures described above, complete the form that applies to your circumstances. Note that incomplete forms or a failure to provide suitable documentation may result in a decision on the request being delayed, the appeal being closed or the request being denied.
