Laurier launches full-time co-op MBA program

Communications, Public Affairs & Marketing

Jan 16/06

Laurier is launching a full-time, co-op MBA program this fall, and is now taking applications for entrance in the program from candidates who have recently completed or are in the process of soon completing a four-year undergraduate degree program.

“It’s designed for those with no or very little work experience,” says Dr. Peter Carayannopoulos, director of MBA programs in the School of Business & Economics.

“We are looking for students who are very strong academically, whether they are in arts, science, engineering or any other field. This will be their opportunity to get a quality graduate business degree that will open up better career opportunities for them.”

The regular full-time MBA takes one year to complete; the addition of two work terms means the new co-op program will be 20 months in length.

There is clearly a demand for such a program, Carayannopoulos says. There has been a trend recently whereby applicants to the regular MBA program are getting younger and have less work experience. In addition, he says, employers are looking for “people with diverse academic backgrounds coupled with a quality graduate business education.”

Students in the new co-op MBA program will take the same courses that students in the regular full-time program take, including the core courses, a consulting project and a practicum with a not-for-profit organization.

“The only difference is the addition of the work terms,” says Carayannopoulos, and Career Services will have a person in place “just for the co-op MBA program.”

The minimum admission requirements for the new program are:
• a four-year undergraduate degree in any discipline, with an average of 73 percent or better in the last 10 half-credits studied,
• a GMAT score of 550 or better, and
• three academic references.

Cost of the program is $20,100 tuition ($6,700 per term), plus co-op fees of $468 per term and an estimated $6,000 for books and incidentals.

The deadline for applications is May 1, but given a limited enrolment policy applicants are encouraged to apply as soon as possible. Laurier is accepting applications and may grant conditional acceptance to qualified applicants who have not yet completed their four-year undergraduate degree but who will have completed it before the start of the new program.
