Three Laurier alumni honoured by Greater KW Chamber of Commerce
Communications, Public Affairs & Marketing
Laurier alumni took home entrepreneur, volunteer and community leader awards from the Greater Kitchener Waterloo Chamber of Commerce annual Business Excellence Awards Gala on Feb. 17.
Paul Maxwell of Maxwell’s Music House in Waterloo won the Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award. Maxwell graduated from Wilfrid Laurier University in 2007 with a Bachelor of Business Administration. Shortly after graduation he turned the seed of an idea into a reality, creating a space that offers jam and performance space, music lessons, workshops and rock star camps.
The Volunteer of the Year Award was given to Caroline Oliver, who has chaired the Chamber’s networking breakfast committee. She also volunteers with Conestoga College and the Canadian Association of Gift Planners. Oliver has been director of development and marketing with the Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery since 2003. In 1989 she graduated from Laurier with a Master of Business Administration.
The Michael R. Follett Community Leader Award went to Jacqui Murphy, who is the co-founder of Social Venture Partners Waterloo Region. The organization helps non-profits become viable businesses. She also founded Art Allies, which aims to connect local artists with buyers in the community. Murphy graduated from Laurier in 1995 with a Bachelor of Business Administration.
The Business Excellence Awards Gala highlights companies and individuals that have made exceptional contributions through their community involvement and leadership within the Chamber. There were a total of 63 nominees in 11 different categories for this year’s awards.
