The Laurier Centre for Economics Research and Policy Analysis (LCERPA) has released its July issue of Labour Market News. The quarterly publication provides up-to-date news and expert economic opinion on labour market trends and policy issues.

“The newsletter provides a vehicle for our talented researchers in labour economics to provide insights into the latest data and highlight important issues in a way that is accessible for non-academics,” said William Morrison, LCERPA director and economics professor at Wilfrid Laurier University.

The release of Labour Market News coincides with Statistic Canada’s announcement of the latest labour market data. In addition to commenting on the latest trends, each issue of Labour Market News explores a different topic, such as summer employment, minimum wages and unionization rates in Canada. The first issue was released in February 2010, and focused on retirement and the recession.

Falling unemployment rates have experts optimistic that the economy is picking up in Ontario, according to the latest edition.

“While the effects of growing full-time employment are somewhat uneven in the southwest, readers will be encouraged by the latest figures for Kitchener,” said Morrison.

For the special feature article, economics professor Hideki Ariizumi offers some food for thought concerning the links between recessions and health, and in particular that recessions might actually lead to improvements in health.

All issues of Labour Market News can be downloaded from the LCERPA website at For more information, call Ariizumi at 519-884-0710 ext. 2277.

LCERPA is an international association of academic and professional economists based at Wilfrid Laurier University’s School of Business & Economics.
