Laurier’s Waterloo campus offers new secured bike storage area

Sep 11/12

Students, staff and faculty at Laurier’s Waterloo campus now have access to a secured bike storage area, located on the north side of MacDonald House Residence.

The secured area has a key fob system, lighting, and a surveillance camera to ensure a safe and covered area for up to 25 bikes.

“The secured bike storage area offers a safe option for students, staff and faculty working late at night,” said Claire Bennett, coordinator of Laurier’s Sustainability Office. “It also allows us to test drive a facility we see as high need.”

The project is a partnership between the Sustainability Office, Physical Resources, and Parking and Transportation Resources.

The Sustainability Office worked with Physical Resources to determine the location of the new covered area. Mike Welk, project coordinator of Renovations and Construction at Laurier, said that after completing a landscaping/walkway project in an adjacent area, they ended up with a path underneath MacDonald House that didn’t lead anywhere.

“We thought this could be an ideal location as the area was no longer being used as a walkway,” said Welk. “The secured bike storage area offers that extra peace-of-mind for cyclists that their investment is being protected.”

Those interested in using the new bike storage area can visit Parking and Transportation Resources to download the agreement form: It costs $15 per term for staff and faculty, and $8 per term for students. There is also a $10 refundable deposit for the key fob.

If the pilot project is successful, a similar secured bike storage area will be implemented at Laurier’s Brantford campus.
