Laurier to host event in recognition of Victims Week
On Thursday, April 10, Laurier’s Faculty of Social Work will host a luncheon and a premier screening of “It’s Hard to Break a Tree”: Engaging Survivor Voices in VAW Work.
In recognition of Victims Week 2014, the Social Innovation Research Group (SIRG) will showcase a short, locally produced documentary that centres on the voices of survivors of violence against women and their messages.
“We are very pleased to be partnering with the Department of Justice in recognition of Victims Week 2014,”said Ginette Lafrenière, associate professor, Faculty of Social Work and director of the Manulife Centre for Healthy Living. “It’s important that we all work together as a community to create a future free of violence against women.”
In addition to the documentary, the event will feature keynote speaker Nneka MacGregor. MacGregor is the executive director of WomenatthecentrE, a provincial survivor-led initiative, which offers insightful and compelling help to organizations working towards eradicating violence against women.
