Common Reading Program celebrates the winners of inaugural writing contest
This summer, Laurier's Common Reading Program invited all first-year students entering the Faculty of Arts to share the experience of reading Indian Horse, a novel by Richard Wagamese. Each student received a free copy of the book in the summer, and when they arrived at Laurier in the fall, they had a chance to discuss Indian Horse with their peers and participate in various orientation events focused on the book.
In addition to reading Indian Horse, students were also invited to participate in a writing contest in which they were asked to write a 250-word response to the question: "Indian Horse tells the story of how Saul used means both beneficial and hurtful to himself to cope with life's difficulties. What do you find helpful when you can't rely on family?”
“We are so pleased with the extensive community involvement in the Common Reading Program writing contest, which included the Office of Aboriginal Initiatives and the Aboriginal Student House, diverse faculty members, senior students, as well as local secondary schools,” said Ute Lischke, chair of English and Film Studies. “This initiative was aimed at incoming students in order to acculturate them to university life, and I feel we were able to accomplish this.”
A panel of three, which consisted of a faculty member in English, a staff member, and a student, judged the contest. Winners of this year’s contest include:
- First place: Janet Kwon - "What's the Limit?"
- Second place: Marissa Evans - "Weighting for Air"
- Third place: Patrick Enright - "Enduring the Abyss: A Guide to Surviving a Motherless, Brotherless, and Potentially Meaningless Existence"
Honourable mentions were also given to Aamna Qureshi for "The Great Escape" and Scott Cooke for "Closing the Distance through Memories."
All students and members of the Laurier community are invited to attend an awards ceremony to recognize the winners and entrants in the writing contest on Friday, Nov. 15 at 1 p.m. in the Laurier Library on Laurier’s Waterloo campus.
