Laurier's sustainability efforts highlighted in Climate Action Plan for Waterloo Region

Oct 28/13

Wilfrid Laurier University has been highlighted in the recently released Climate Action Plan for Waterloo Region.

The university was commended for its commitment to reduce its carbon impact by 25 per cent over the next 10 years. To achieve this goal, Laurier recently sub-metered all of its main buildings with electricity, natural gas, and water meters. The meters feed utility information into an energy management system as well as an online dashboard for the university and greater community to see. The project was made possible through an investment from the Presidentís Innovation Seed Fund.

Laurier was also noted as a Pledging Partner in Regional Carbon Initiative, a collective effort to reduce the carbon impact of organizations located in Waterloo Region. To-date, these collective commitments add up to 45,000 tonnes, or the equivalent of taking 10,000 cars off the road every year.

The Climate Action Plan for Waterloo Region was developed by a number of local organizations operating collectively as ClimateActionWR. The planís aim is to take a significant step towards improving quality of life in Waterloo Region by transitioning to a low-carbon economy and, in doing so, taking leadership in a global effort to reduce the impacts of climate change.

Claire Bennett, Laurier's sustainability coordinator, was chair of the Institutional, Commercial and Industrial (ICI) section of the group that developed the plan. As well, a key proponent of the plan is the organization known as Sustainable Waterloo Region, which was co-founded by Laurier alumnus Mike Morrice

The Climate Action Plan for Waterloo Region, which will be presented to local municipal councils this fall, can be found at:
