Food for Fines: pay library fines with food and support Student Food Bank

Nov 22/12

With assignments to write, exams to think about, and part-time jobs and social lives to manage, itís a given that at some point in their university lives, most students will forget to return a library book.

What shouldnít be a given, however, is that a quiet minority of students canít afford to eat.

Seemingly unrelated issues, but from November 19 to December 14, Laurier's Food for Fines program is linking the two by allowing people to pay their library fines with food items. The food will go directly to the Laurier Studentsí Union food bank.

Library overdue fees will be reduced by $2 per non-perishable food item to a maximum of $10 per person. Laurier's Waterloo and Kitchener libraries are participating. Food for Fines does not apply to University of Guelph or University of Waterloo fines.

Food donations will be accepted at the library circulation desk. Additional food items are welcome, as well as donations from people without library fines.
