Laurier community reaches out to Haiti

The Laurier community is responding to the devastating earthquake in Haiti by collecting donations for relief agencies and urging others to contribute.

The Laurier Bookstore in Waterloo and on the Brantford campus is accepting donations and providing them to the Canadian Red Cross. The Laurier Bookstore collected more than $1,000 on Thursday.

As well, organizers of “Screening the Caribbean,” a film series organized by Laurier’s Department of English and Film Studies, will be distributing a pamphlet at tonight’s opening film that provides contact information for aid organizations that are delivering relief assistance in Haiti.

Here are two of many organizations that are coordinating donations:

A number of people in the Laurier community have close ties to Haiti. Jennifer Brickman, supervisor at the Brantford Bookstore, has volunteered with an orphanage in northern Haiti in the past and is planning another visit in March.

“I’ve seen the poverty and I really feel for those people,” she said. “We need to do all we can to help out and this is our way of contributing.”

Dr. Rachelle Doucet, a former Laurier faculty member in the Department of Anthropology, returned to Haiti in 2007. She emailed a former colleague at Laurier yesterday to say she survived the quake but has lost family members and continues to look for others.
