TEDxWaterloo event to be streamed live to the Laurier community

Communications, Public Affairs & Marketing

Mar 20/12

Wilfrid Laurier University will provide a live feed to the innovative TEDxWaterloo event at Laurier’s Waterloo campus March 21. This is the second year Laurier has provided a live feed to the event.

Twelve inspiring speakers such as Izzeldin Abuelaish, known as "the Gaza Doctor" and the author of I Shall Not Hate, Jean Beliveau, a man who walked around the world, and Roberta Hunt, a jazz and blues musician, will be beamed from the stage at Kitchener’s Centre in the Square to Laurier’s Waterloo campus via a live feed.

The event is free and you can drop in to watch the event at the following locations:

•    Wilf’s Den – 1 p.m. to 8 p.m.
•    Science Building, N1044, N1056 – 2:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. (just off the Science courtyard)

The theme of the 2012 event is “DIS CONNECTED.” A full list of 2011 TEDxWaterloo speakers can be found at:

The President’s Innovation Seed Fund (PISF) is sponsoring the live feed of the event, along with the Laurier Centre for Community Service-Learning (CSL). The PISF, which also sponsored the event last year, was established in 2009 and provides seed money to initiate ideas and help them become self-sustaining programs. CSL integrates meaningful community service with classroom instruction and critical reflection to enrich the learning experience and strengthen communities for the common good. The event is also being sponsored by the Faculty of Science Students’ Association (FOSSA) and the Psych Society.

Laurier will host its own TEDxLaurier event Sept. 26, also featuring 12 speakers who will speak and perform throughout the day. Further details will be provided closer to the date.

TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) is an annual conference that started in California featuring thought leaders. In the spirit of "ideas worth spreading," TED has created a program called TEDx, which is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience.
