Laurier mourns the passing of three members of the university community

The Wilfrid Laurier University community is saddened by the recent passing of retired chemistry professor Dr. Michael Krech, alumni John Spoltore and alumna Kate Bienkowski.

Dr. Michael Krech, September 27, 1937 Ė April 26, 2010

Dr. Michael Krech, retired professor of chemistry at Laurier, passed away on Monday, April 26, 2010. Michael was predeceased by his wife of 43 years, Barbara (nee Ewasyke) in 2006. He is survived by his children, Lori (Martin) Berg and Michael Krech, and grandchildren, Emma Krech, Katie Berg and Alex Berg.

Michael taught in Laurierís chemistry department full time from 1966 to 2003 and part-time from 2003 to 2006. Michael was a retired Lieutenant of the Royal Canadian Reserve.

John Spoltore, August 25, 1971 - April 30, 2010

Wilfrid Laurier University alumni John Spoltore passed away on April 30, 2010 at Toronto Western Hospital after a brief battle with brain cancer. John is survived by his mother, Noni Campbell (Tony Bridger), who recently retired from Laurierís Registrarís Office; father Ralph Spoltore Sr. (BA í69); sister Lori (BA í93; Steve Slessor) and brother Ralph (BA í95; Andrea, BA í94); soul mate Doris Baumgartner and daughter Kendall.

John completed his BA at Laurier in 1999. He received the Presidentís Award for best male athlete of the year, 1992-1993. John enjoyed a successful hockey career in the Ontario Hockey League, American Hockey League, United Hockey League and the International Hockey League.

Visitation at the Henry Walser Funeral Home will be held May 4 and 5. A celebration of Johnís life will take place Thursday, May 6 at Creekside Church in Waterloo and Thursday evening at the Turret. Kathryn (Kate) Bienkowski (nee Kilpatrick) 1963 Ė 2010

Wilfrid Laurier University alumna Kate Bienkowski (nee Kilpatrick) passed away on May 2, 2010 following a two-year battle with cancer. Kate is survived by her husband of 24 years, Stephen Bienkowski (BA í85), her children Michelle and Erin, parents Marilyn and Dr. Neville Lefcoe and Jim and Carmen Kilpatrick and her brothers and sisters.

Kate received her BA from Laurier in 1984. She completed her BEd at Laurentian University in 1985. Kate was a teacher in Waterloo for 24 years, most recently at Northlake Woods Public School. She was active in the community, teaching Sunday school, coaching soccer and serving as a dog therapy volunteer.
