Laurier community remembers Walter Hachborn

Communications, Public Affairs & Marketing

Dec 20/16

Wilfrid Laurier University is mourning the loss of business leader and philanthropist Walter Hachborn, who served on the university's Board of Governors for 10 years.

Hachborn, co-founder and president emeritus of Home Hardware Stores Ltd., passed away on Dec. 17. He was 95 years old.

Through a combination of business acumen, work ethic, ingenuity and kindness, Hachborn inspired thousands of people during the course of his distinguished career. Known locally in Waterloo Region, nationally and internationally, he helped establish Home Hardware as one of Canada's most-admired corporations.

In 1985, Laurier presented Hachborn with an honorary doctor of laws degree. The university's Walter and Jean Hachborn Award of Distinction is named for Hachborn and his wife.

For his many personal and professional achievements, Hachborn was named a member of the Order of Canada in 2000. He is also a recipient of the Queen's Silver, Golden and Diamond Jubilee Medals.
