Sept. 16-20 is Postdoc Appreciation Week

Communications, Public Affairs & Marketing

Sep 16/13

Postdoc Appreciation Week, taking place Sept. 16-20, is a time when universities across Canada and the United States can recognize the significant contributions that postdoctoral fellows, or “postdocs,” make to research.

A postdoc is a recent PhD graduate who is doing research, usually at a university in collaboration with a faculty member.

“Laurier’s postdocs play a critical role in the research enterprise of the university in terms of productivity, but also by bringing innovative ideas and approaches to existing research projects while at the same time developing their own independent research areas,” said Matt Smith, associate dean, Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. “They also play key mentorship roles for junior undergraduate and graduate student researchers.”

In recognition of the important contributions that postdocs make to the university, the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies will be hosting a networking event for postdocs Sept. 18. The event will also feature information about ASPIRE, Laurier’s new professional skills development program that was created to help prepare graduate students and postdocs for the next steps in their career.

At Laurier, there are typically 15-20 postdocs working at any given time, and their numbers have been on the rise in recent years. Postdocs are becoming increasingly important to the research output of the university.

“We’re delighted to recognize all the hard work and important contributions made by the postdocs at Laurier, and will continue to strive to provide postdocs with a positive and productive experience while they are here,” said Smith.

More information about Laurier postdoctoral fellows and postdoc opportunities can be found on the website.
