Laurier Professor Marta Marín-Dòmine to speak about documentary filmmaking

Communications, Public Affairs & Marketing

Feb 27/13

Laurier’s MA in Cultural Analysis and Social Theory (CAST) program presents a CAST Faculty Research Colloquium Presentation by Marta Marín-Dòmine, director of the Centre for Memory and Testimony Studies and associate professor of Languages and Literatures. The talk will take place at 1:30 p.m. Friday, March 1 in DAWB 2-105.

Marín-Dòmine's talk is titled “A case study on the use of audiovisual archive as an act of transmission: The making of ‘Jewish memory 1930/1942. Quartier Marolles. Brussels,’” and is based on a documentary she produced, directed and wrote.

Both her talk and the film interrogate the way that documentaries develop a series of perspectives that question the illusion of objectivity. The use of archival images follows the ethical trend to give voice and body to the testimony. From this perspective, a multidisciplinary approach that considers the visual memories of testimonies is at play: memories not only counterbalance official history, but also create new (film) narratives that might be inserted in the collective memory of the present. In a way, the documentary film that departs from the archive creates in itself an event as it shows the interrelation of memory, fiction, and narration.

Questions that will be discussed include: the current status of testimony, the role of emotion into the construction of film memories, and the alliance between literature, art and archives.
