Dr. John W. Schwieter publishes books and articles

Nov 19/12

Dr. John W. Schwieter, associate professor of Spanish and linguistics, has edited the book, Innovative research and practices in second language acquisition and bilingualism (2013) which is being published by John Benjamins, one of the top scholarly presses in language and linguistics. The book will appear as a volume in the Language Learning & Language Teaching series edited by Nina Spada (Ontario Institute for Studies in Education-University of Toronto) and Nelleke Van Deusen-Scholl (Yale University). It showcases contributions from leading scholars who present theoretical and empirical-based studies at the forefront of research in second language acquisition and cognitive bilingualism. Schwieter’s chapter in the book discusses the development of the cognitive processes that help multilinguals to effectively restrict their speech output to one language in order to avoid massive intrusions from their other language(s).

Also soon to be released is Schwieter’s edited book, Studies and global perspectives of second language teaching and learning (2013) which is being published by Information Age Publishing, an innovative publisher of scholarly books and journals primarily in education, psychology, and business. The book will appear as a volume in the Research in Second Language Learning series edited by JoAnn Hammadou Sullivan (University of Rhode Island). It features a diverse set of original studies and perspectives from researchers and language educators from around the globe while highlighting important theoretical and practical underpinnings of the second language classroom. Schwieter’s chapter in the book reports on the effect of language immersion experiences (SP200: Study Abroad) on second language lexical development and linguistic competence.

This last year, Schwieter’s research was published in journals such as Bilingualism: Language and Cognition (Cambridge University Press), Diaspora, Indigenous, and Minority Education: An International Journal (Routledge), and Linguistic Approaches to Bilingualism (John Benjamins). He also has chapters forthcoming in books to be published by Continuum, the International Society for Language Studies, and the University of Eastern Finland Press.

Schwieter was named the 2012 Faculty of Arts Teaching Scholar and currently serves as the Faculty Mentor of the Laurier Arts Scholars Society.
