Summer leadership conference lets incoming students experience life at Laurier
Communications, Public Affairs & Marketing
Wilfrid Laurier University is hosting its annual LEAP Conference for incoming students at its Waterloo campus July 5 to 7, and at its Brantford campus Aug. 9 to 11.
The conference, Leadership-Engagement-Academic Success-Purpose (LEAP), is designed to prepare incoming first-year students for life at university. Students will get to experience living in residence, participate in team-building and leadership development activities, develop a personal plan for first year and beyond, and much more.
“We want students to feel comfortable at Laurier before they move in and begin classes,” said Drew Piticco, manager of the Student Leadership Centre at Laurier’s Waterloo campus. “Participation in LEAP builds a foundation for academic excellence, meaningful student involvement, and awareness and comfort on campus.”
“Senior student volunteers will also give participants tools to tackle typical first-year challenges and help them to make the most of their first year at Laurier,” said Jessi Calberry, Learning and Co-curricular Programming coordinator at Laurier’s Brantford campus.
Senior student leaders will facilitate the student success sessions, which will teach transitional, leadership and communication skills, and help students explore their personal leadership styles and how to make the most of university.
Students will gain specific information about how to get involved with on-campus organizations such as the Wilfrid Laurier University Student’s Union (WLUSU), Athletics and Residence Life. The weekend also includes professional and faculty speakers, and evening entertainment.
Laurier is known for its sense of community, high level of volunteerism and a culture of inspiring lives of leadership and purpose.
Registration is now open for the Leap conferences at both campuses. Conference fees are $220 plus tax, and include six meals, two nights accommodation, t-shirt and programming.
