WATERLOO – High-school students interested in attending Wilfrid Laurier University next fall can get a preview of what the university has to offer during its annual fall open house.

The university community expects to welcome more than 1,500 visitors during Laurier Day this Friday.

High-school students and their parents will learn about academic programming and sample life on Laurier’s Waterloo campus. They will attend information sessions on the department, faculty or school of their choice, tour residences, experience aspects of student life, and discover the campus they may call home over the next few years.

“Laurier Day gives students and their families the opportunity to find out what Laurier has to offer as they research their university options,” explained Lise Pedersen, acting manager of liaison services. “Learning about our academic programs and experiencing Laurier’s campus spirit and facilities first-hand helps many students to decide that Laurier is the right school for them.”

Laurier Day begins at 9:30 a.m. in the concourse of the Fred Nichols Campus Centre. Visitors can pick up a schedule of events, which includes a campus map and other information to make the visit a success. Tours will leave from the concourse throughout the day, beginning at 10 a.m.

A series of academic sessions – covering programs in arts, science, and business and economics – will begin 9:30 a.m. and be repeated at 12:30 p.m. The faculty of music will host an open house from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and offer a free concert from noon to 1 p.m. as well as an audition work shop from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.

Visitors can speak to faculty and students during an academic information fair from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. A student-life fair, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., will offer a look at life outside of the classroom. A student success session will run at 10:45 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. and will introduce students to Learning Services and the Student Leadership centre.

The first of two sessions on co-operative education will begin at 11 a.m. and will be repeated at 1:30 p.m. Sessions on the admissions process, financial aid and applying to residence will begin at 11:30 a.m. and again at 1:30 p.m.

A general information session, during which a recent graduate will draw on her experience to outline the reasons for choosing Laurier, will begin at 2:30 p.m. She will offer an overview of the university, its academic programs, its strengths and the reasons behind its reputation for academic excellence.

A residence open house will run from 11 a.m.  to 3 p.m. Visitors can tour single-room, double-room and apartment-style accommodations and see the facilities available with each version. A residence information booth will be set up on campus to answer any general residence questions and meet our residence life area co-ordinators.
