Laurier Brantford recognizes Centennial Scholarship recipients

Jan 26/12

Family and friends joined faculty and staff at Laurier Brantford on January 20 to celebrate the Brantford campus recipients of the 100 Centennial Scholarships.   The centennial initiative awarded 100 promising students with one-year full-tuition scholarships in celebration of Laurier’s centenary in 2011.

Undergraduate and graduate students who embody the traits of leadership, passion and achievement – the ‘Laurier DNA’ – were encouraged to apply for the scholarships. Family and friends were also encouraged to nominate students who exhibit these traits.

“We received an overwhelming response to the call for applications,” said Lesley Cooper, vice-president/principal of the Brantford campus. “This program was designed to highlight Laurier’s reputation for inspiring lives of leadership and purpose. And so we set out to attract students from across the world with what we call the Laurier DNA – students who possess leadership, passion and achievement, and you are those students.”

Scholarship winner Karly Rathe – a Journalism student who is active on campus including serving as community representative on the Brantford Residence Council –spoke at the event. Rathe participated in many clubs and community activities in her home town including the Sears Drama Festival, the Orchestra and was an active volunteer with organizations such as Operation Christmas Child.

“I recognize the importance of community involvement and giving back, and I know my fellow scholarship winners feel the same way,” said Rath.

A similar ceremony was held on Jan. 17 on Laurier’s Waterloo campus for Waterloo recipients.
