First Lecture in Journalism and Human Rights Speaker Series a Double Success

The first of three presentations in the speaker series took place on January 27 at Brant Community Church. It was attended by about 200 students and members of the community. Co-founder and Executive Director of Journalists for Human Rights (JHR), Ben Peterson, spoke about the events that led him to found this NGO, about its activities in training journalists in Africa to report on human rights issues, and on the benefits of founding a local chapter. The event was covered in last Fridays Expositor.

The event also marked the successful launching of Laurier Brantfords own School Chapter of Journalists for Human Rights . Melinda Cheevers, who has taken the lead role in bringing JHR to Brantford, reported that by the end of the event enough interest had been shown to establish JHR as an official club.
To contact Melinda, please e-mail:

Thanks to all who helped out, in particular, the Laurier Branford Community Grants Program for funding the series, Brant Community Church for letting us use their sanctuary, Kevin and Holly in Recruitment for helping with promotion, Sarah and Tara for providing security, and Melinda for making the initial contact with JHR.

The next presentation, Poverty and the Press, is on Feb. 7 at 12:30 to 2:00 at BCC.

The second in a series of lectures on Human Rights and Journalism

More than 1.7 million Canadian households live on less than $20,000 a year, and 250,000 people are homeless. In Brantford, about 1,200 people use the food bank each month, including Laurier students. Yet, with some notable recent exceptions, the press typically deems the stories behind the statistics to be unworthy of coverage. This panel discussion addresses what is and isnt making the news about poverty and why.

Featured Speakers :
Bill Dunphy of the Hamilton Spectator, one of the few reporters in Canada assigned to the poverty beat
John Clarke , founding member of the militant and controversial Ontario Coalition Against Poverty
Dan David , an award winning journalist Mohawk journalist now working in media relations at Six Nations

WHEN: Tuesday, February 7, 12:30 - 2:00
WHERE: Brant Community Church

Sue Ferguson
Assistant Professor, Journalism
