This spring’s convocation marked the achievements of some graduates who have left an indelible mark on Laurier, or who have close connections to the Laurier community. For example:

Three past Graduate Students’ Association chairs graduated:

  • Melany Banks (PhD in philosophy) – GSA President 2009-2010, now a part-time faculty member at Laurier’s Faculty of Arts
  • Hamidreza Faramarzi (PhD in management) – GSA president 2007-2008, now a part-time faculty member at Laurier’s School of Business & Economics and independent consultant
  • Eric Sadowski (MA in geography) – GSA president 2008-2009, now a doctoral candidate at the University of Western Ontario

Family Connections:

  • Evan Sharp (MA in ancient Mediterranean cultures) – son of Gwen Sharp, Associate Registrar, Records
  • Melany Banks (PhD in philosophy) – daughter of Dr. William Banks, Acting Dean, School of Business & Economics 
  • Ellen Desjardins (PhD in geography) – wife of Dr. Michel Desjardins, Chair, Global Studies
  • James Munro (MBA) – son of Dr. Hugh Munro, MBA Director

Connections through broader postsecondary education:

  • Melissa Skerritt and Patricia Chou (MSW) – former undergraduate students at University of Guelph, taught by Laurier’s Joan Norris, Dean of the Faculty of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies
  • Lydia Summerlee (MA in political science) – daughter of Dr. Alastair Summerlee, President of the University of Guelph
