25 Graduate Students awarded Travel & Research Awards

Mar 31/11

The Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies announces 25 doctoral student recipients for the new Travel & Research Award.

A core competency of the PhD degree is the ability to carry out independent, high quality research. Socialization to a discipline and a community of scholars aids in the development of this competency. A high impact practice for teaching and advising doctoral students requires helping students to make the connection between their focused area of interest and the larger academy. Networks are built and curriculum vitae strengthened through engagement with other scholars beyond the confines of one university campus.

Nominations were invited from doctoral advisors and the selection was made by the Graduate Awards Committee. Award-winning doctoral students are registered in the following programs:

English & Film Studies (2); Geography & Environmental Studies (1); Global Governance (2); History (5); Management (5); Psychology (4); Religious Studies (2) and Social Work (4). Recipients may use the award to travel to scholarly conferences for the purposes of research presentation or for travel opportunities for advanced research training (e.g., workshops on statistical methods; access to special archives, equipment, collections, fieldwork; international practica).

Recipients will participate in a Graduate Student Research Day to be held in the fall of 2011, where they will present their research to the university community.

The next call for nominations will be in the fall term (2011).
