Laurier BBA students a success at CFA Institute Research Challenge

Mar 6/12

A team of students from Laurier’s School of Business & Economics placed second out of eight Ontario schools that competed in the CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) Institute Research Challenge sponsored by the Toronto CFA Society. The team — consisting of BBA students Mike Cestas, Greg Cohen, Sushrut Deodhar Alex Garriock, and Matthew Jolliffe — prepared an analyst report on Onex Corporation, a private equity manager listed on the Toronto stock exchange.

On the basis of their written report, Laurier’s team was selected to be one of four finalists who presented their analysis to a panel of judges in Toronto on March 1, 2012. The Laurier team placed second behind the University of Waterloo, whose team consisted of graduate students from the Masters of Accounting program.  Other finalists included the Schulich School of Business, York University, and the University of Toronto, Scarborough.

Laurier’s team was mentored by Finance Professor Brian Smith and CFA charter holder, Gerry Ramos, a wealth planner with HSBC. Smith noted “I am very proud of the Laurier team. These students who just took their first finance course in the Fall worked incredibly hard to understand a complex company and deliver an outstanding report and presentation.”

Laurier’s strong performance follows its 2009-2010 first place finish in the same competition. This annual Challenge is designed to promote best practices in equity research among the next generation of analysts through hands-on mentoring and intensive training in company analysis and presentation skills.
