Laurier’s School of Business & Economics was the proud host for the 2012 Northern Finance Association (NFA) Conference that took place in Niagara Falls from September 28, 2012 through September 30, 2012.

The NFA is the largest association of finance academics in Canada and has held an annual conference for more than 20 years. The conference is hosted by a different Canadian post-secondary institution each year. Last year’s host was the Sauder School of Business at the University of British Columbia.

“It is an honour to have been selected as host of the 2012 NFA Conference,” says 2012 conference co-chair Dr. Brian Smith, professor and finance area coordinator for Laurier’s School of Business & Economics. “The sheer magnitude of organizing a conference of this size with such a global reach has been truly rewarding. We were happy to welcome members of the finance community including our keynote speaker Andrew Karolyi from Cornell University. I applaud my colleague Madhu Kalimipalli for the many hours he devoted as the primary conference organizer.”

Although the NFA Conference began as a gathering of Canadian academics, it has gained popularity over the last few years and attracts finance academics and practitioners from all over the world, with representatives from 26 countries attending in 2012. This year’s conference consisted of academic paper presentations on various finance topics including corporate finance, asset pricing, market microstructure, banking, and the financial crisis. In addition, the conference also offered an opportunity to those looking to learn about new trends and discoveries made by finance academic research.

The 2012 conference was the largest in the NFA’s history and attracted over 200 finance professors and graduate students.

In 2013, the conference will move once again, this time to Québec City hosted by the Faculté des sciences de l’administration, Université Laval.
