BRANTFORD – The Bachelor of Social Work program at Wilfrid Laurier University will host a presentation by Trish Hennessy, director for Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives (CCPA) to celebrate Social Work Week on Thursday, March 6 at 6:30 p.m. in the Odeon Building, 50 Market Street, Brantford.
Hennessy’s presentation is entitled “Poverty and Inequality: Why We Should Care” and will be based on her work with the CCPA's national project examining income inequality in Canada, of which she was the founding director.
“We’re very excited to have Trish Hennessy on campus, as well as a very impressive panel of experts to provide valuable local context on the issues of poverty and inequality,” said Marc Laferriere, practicum coordinator for Bachelor of Social work at Laurier’s Brantford campus. “This is the first of what we hope will be many events in the Faculty of Social Work which will engage the community.”
Hennessy is a former newspaper journalist, and holds a BA in Sociology from Queen's University, a BSW from Carleton University, and an MA in Sociology from OISE/University of Toronto.
Following her presentation, Hennessy will join Rev. Barry Pridham (Sydenham Street United Church), Sherry Lewis (Brantford Native Housing), Janet McLaughlin (assistant professor, Health Studies, Laurier) and Bob Basso (associate dean, BSW, Laurier) for a panel discussion and community question and answer session, moderated by Laferriere.
Social Work Week is an annual event hosted by the Ontario Association of Social Workers (OASW). This year’s theme is Social Workers: Champions of Positive Change. The week provides an opportunity each year for social workers to promote and celebrate their profession and the life-changing work that they champion in every community.
