Stefan Sereda Awarded Graduate Gold Medal for PhD in Arts

Jul 25/12

Spring Convocation 2012

Film Studies and English Phd graduate, Stefan Sereda was awarded the Graduate Gold Medal for PhD study in the Faculty of Arts.

Stefan Sereda's thesis, "Cinema in Scare Quotes:  Postmodern Aesthetics and Economics in the American Art Cinema" studies developments in American independent film and Hollywood's forays into art from the 1960 to the present.  He looks at the ways Hollywood Renaissance films of the 1960s and 1970s and "smart" films have adapted to and benefited from the commercial Hollywood industry.  The dissertation was supervised by Dr. Russell Kilbourn.

Stefan has a BA and MA from Wilfrid Laurier University and held a SSHRC Doctoral Fellowship as well as an Ontario Graduate Scholarship during his PhD studies.  He says,"One aspect of my PhD study that I found to be most rewarding was exchanging ideas with my professors and my peers about my research projects.  I was able to write a groundbreaking study, as there are no books on the history of American art film."

Dr. Sereda will teach two courses on his area of specialization, American cinema this coming school year.
