Noted composer visits Laurier

Feb 16/12

Dr. Karlheinz Essl, professor of electroacoustic composition and experimental music at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, was the guest speaker at a composition seminar last night on campus.  Laurier is one of two schools he visits on his current trip to Canada; at week’s end, he stops at McGill for a portrait concert of his works.  His visit is in part supported by the Austrian Cultural Forum & Embassy in Ottawa.

Essl has been in Canada, participating in a week-long residency with Elaine Lau’s and Joseph Ferretti's ensemble, junctQín, which culminates with a world premiere of a piano work he has written for them.  The commission was made possible through the Ernst von Siemens Foundation in Switzerland.  JunctQín is the only Canadian group to have won funding for a composer commission this go round. Essl  spoke about this work when he visited with students—his music has been featured in many international festivals such as the Salzburg Festival, and Ars Musica (Brussels), and he has collaborated with the most important contemporary music ensembles including the Arditti Quartet in London.  JunctQin is a collective of pianists, founded in 2009, which focuses on new and unusual music for keyboard and percussion-type instruments.
