ITS announcement: Expanded Wireless Coverage at Laurier
Following a successful pilot of a new high density wireless technology, ITS would like to announce expansion of wireless capability in several locations:
Odeon - All Floors
Science Building - Atrium
3rd Floor Bricker Academic Building and some areas adjacent
Peters Building - All Floors
Schlegel Building - All Floors
Fred Nichols Campus Centre - Cafeteria and 3rd Floor
255 King - 3rd and 4th Floors
While some are already complete, all of the locations listed above will be complete by the end of September. The Dining Hall (including Paul Martin Centre/Senate and Board Chamber) was completed in Spring 2011 with the successful close of the pilot project.
The technology being deployed is a high density Wi-Fi solution comprised of "arrays" - each of which has the capability to act as 4, 8, 12 or 16 of the traditional "access points" coupled with other components that improve reliability, security and manageability.
As a result, the devices provide much more range, coverage and bandwidth, while supporting higher numbers of simultaneous connections - in a manner that also supports "spikes" in traffic demand as people move and congregate. Members of the Laurier community will enjoy a much more reliable and consistently performing wireless solution as a result.
Some of this work has been made possible as a result of generous funding contributions from WLUSU and PRISM. ITS wishes to extend an important thank you to these groups for their partnership in bringing reliable wireless capability to more areas of campus than would otherwise possible at this point in time.
