WATERLOO – Wilfrid Laurier University invites the community to celebrate and learn about Aboriginal culture during Aboriginal Awareness Week, taking place from March 1 to March 9 on the Laurier’s Waterloo and Brantford campuses.

“We encourage everyone to attend an event or two and learn about who we are and what programming is available throughout the year at our Aboriginal Student Centres,” said Jean Becker, senior advisor: Aboriginal Initiatives at Laurier. “Through our centres the entire Laurier community has access to a fantastic amount of indigenous knowledge and initiatives.”

Dozens of events are taking place throughout the week, including talks, lunches, crafts, performances, a radio documentary and educational sessions.

Some of the week’s highlights include:

  • A talk by Inuk musician Susan Aglukark, Saturday, March 1 at 2 p.m. in the Maureen Forrester Recital Hall on Laurier’s Waterloo campus. Tickets for this event are $20.
  • “Empowered Women: Haudenosaunee influence on the American Feminist Movement,” a discussion with midwife Jeanne Shenendoah and historian Sally Roesch Wagner, Wednesday, March 5 from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. in GRH 207 on Laurier’s Brantford Campus.
  • Opera Laurier performances of Giiwedin, an Aboriginal opera composed by local talent, Feb. 28, March 1 and March 2 on Laurier’s Waterloo campus. Tickets for the opera are free for Laurier students, high-school students and children, $10 for adults, and $5 for seniors and non-Laurier university students. Tickets can be purchased at the door before each performance, or in advance by emailing or calling 519-884-1970 ext. 4439.
