The Outcomes of Manulife Financial's Significant Gift (2005-2007)

Sep 1/06

Manulife Financial is an international insurance company, whose Canadian Division values graduate education and academic research.

With Manulife Financial’s four year leadership pledge, totalling $800,000, Wilfrid Laurier University has been able to retrofit the heritage site of the former St. Jerome’s College to its current state as a thriving graduate and professional school; the Lyle S. Hallman Faculty of Social Work.

Manulife’s significant gift supported the furnishings, equipment and technology needs of the new building, supported the institution of Laurier’s first faculty-specific Academic Development Fund toward new scholarships and bursaries in the Faculty of Social Work, as well as developed a new research centre in the areas of health and social work.  Upon opening the doors of its new facilities in September, 2006, The Lyle S. Hallman Faculty of Social Work marked its 40 year history of success with the formal launch of the Manulife Centre for Healthy Living under the direction of newly appointed Director, Dr. Susan Cadell.

In recognition of Manulife Financial’s generosity, the Centre for Healthy Living and the main floor auditorium space has been named.  Value statements are reflected on donor recognition signage throughout the facility by the donor name being associated with a social work value; a unique way to communicate the meaning behind your gift to the Laurier community and the general public.  Since the auditorium space is used for student assembly, professional development, continuing education and community workshops, and Manulife Financial has a strong local community presence and made a commitment to the development of the Centre for Healthy Living, it is only fitting that Manulife Financial chose to be recognized as valuing “healthy relationships”.
