Political Science

Thanks, Alumni!

Mar 27/13

During this past year, a number of our Political Science alumni returned to campus to give talks to current Laurier students.

In conjunction with the Career Centre, we held a number of "Career Night" sessions that allowed students to gain insight into how some of our graduates had taken the skills that they had acquired at Laurier out into the job market:

Sean Simpson '11 (Associate Vice President, IPSOS-Reid) and Michael Howell (Senior Research Manager, IPSOS-Reid) spoke about the field of public opinion research and marketing;
Sue Brown '73 (President, Peacebuilding Centre; Past Chief, Peacebuilding Unit at the Canadian International Development Agency), Lenore Dougan '10 (Policy Advisor at Ontario Energy Board) and Anthony Piscitelli '12 (Supervisor of Planning & Research, Waterloo Region Crime Prevention Council; Trustee, Waterloo Catholic District School Board) discussed career options in the public sector, at federal, provincial and municipal levels; and
A. Kelsey Orth '00 (Associate, Crawford Chondon & Partners) and Phaedra Klodner '92 (Phaedra Klodner Law Office) reflected on their careers in Labour Law and Family Law, respectively, and more generally on the law school experience.
We were also very pleased to have Christian Pearce '02 deliver a talk in November, "Trigger Politics: Guns and Crime in Canada."  Since publishing his book, Enter the Babylon System: Unpacking Gun Culture from Samuel Colt to 50 Cent, in 2007 (with his colleague, Rodrigo Bascunan), Christian has become known as an expert on gun culture in Canada.

We would like to thank all of our former students for coming back and sharing their experiences with current students.  We look forward to seeing you again and welcoming even more of you!
