Laurier to host first-ever Aboriginal convocation event for area students

WATERLOO – Wilfrid Laurier University is hosting its first-ever Aboriginal convocation event April 30 at its Waterloo campus for Aboriginal students graduating from high school, college or university in Kitchener, Waterloo and Cambridge. 

Twelve students will be honoured April 30 in an event that will include a traditional opening ceremony. Speakers will include Myeengun Henry, manager of Aboriginal Student Services at Conestoga College, and Jean Becker, senior advisor of Aboriginal Initiatives at Laurier. 

“I am so pleased to see this first celebration of Aboriginal graduates from our local institutions take place this year,” said Becker. “It signals a new era in Aboriginal education for the Kitchener-Waterloo Aboriginal community and the local educational institutions.” 

Helping to organize the event are Aboriginal Student Services from Laurier and Conestoga College, Aboriginal Services from St. Paul’s University College at the University of Waterloo, as well as the Waterloo Catholic District School Board and the Waterloo Region District School Board. 

Convocation ceremonies will be held in the Senate and Board Chamber from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on April 30. To register online go to or email The event is free and open to the public.
