WATERLOO – A crowd of more than 10,000 will celebrate Laurier’s centennial at the 2011 Soaring for a Century homecoming celebrations in Brantford and Waterloo.

Homecoming events take place Saturday, Sept. 24 at Laurier Brantford, and Friday, Sept. 30 to Sunday, Oct. 2 at Laurier’s Waterloo campus, and promise to be an exciting celebration of Laurier’s centennial.

“If you have never participated in Laurier homecoming before, this is certainly a great year to start,” said Bridget McMahon, director of alumni relations and annual giving at Laurier. “All alumni are encouraged to come back to campus to enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime event. A celebration like this won’t come around for another 100 years!”

Laurier Brantford’s homecoming on Sept. 24 will feature a doubleheader between the Laurier Golden Hawks baseball team and the Guelph Gryphons, as well as a Laurier Brantford alumni dugout party where alumni and students can connect with current and former classmates in a licensed outdoor tent. Laurier Brantford’s class of 2006 will gather to celebrate their fifth reunion, with a special evening reception in the SC Johnson building. Celebrations conclude with a homecoming pub night in the newly constructed Research and Academic Centre West.

Homecoming celebrations at Laurier’s Waterloo campus, from Friday, Sept. 30 to Sunday, Oct. 2, will include special elements to celebrate Laurier’s 100th anniversary. Events include traditional favourites, such as the free pancake breakfast on Saturday morning, and Sunday’s Laurier Loop run to support the Sun Life Financial Movement Disorders Research and Rehabilitation Centre (MDRC), and new events, such as the Experience Stratford excursion on Sunday.

Laurier Waterloo’s homecoming football game on Saturday, Oct. 1 will see the Laurier Golden Hawks face the Ottawa Gee Gees. The game will be filled with special centennial surprises to mark Laurier’s historic milestone. Guests are encouraged to arrive before 12:30 p.m. for exciting centennial pre-game festivities and to be eligible for the chance to kick a field goal to win $10,000!

A highlight of the homecoming celebrations is the Centennial Alumni Celebration event to honour Laurier’s 100 Alumni of Achievement and reunion classes. The Saturday evening event at Bingeman’s Conference Centre includes dinner and dancing with Blackwater Trio.

Laurier will welcome a number of alumni celebrating milestone reunions in 2011, including the classes of 1961, 1971, 1981, 1986, 1991, 1996, 2001 and 2006 on the Waterloo campus, and the class of 2006 at Laurier Brantford.
