Laurier establishes Dobson Professorship in Innovation and Entrepreneurship

Communications, Public Affairs & Marketing

Dec 15/11

Laurier’s School of Business & Economics (SBE) has established the Dobson Professorship in Innovation and Entrepreneurship through a generous donation by the Dobson Foundation. Prescott Ensign, the inaugural holder of the professorship, served on the faculties of several universities in Canada, as well as state universities in California and Ohio, before joining Laurier.

“We are very fortunate to have Dr. Scott Ensign join the SBE faculty,” said Steve Farlow, executive director of The Schlegel Centre for Entrepreneurship. “The Schlegel Centre for Entrepreneurship is inspired by the vital role entrepreneurs play in the Canadian economy, and Scott is a leader in entrepreneurial education.”

A recipient of a Fullbright Scholarship, Ensign has been honoured for both his teaching and research, which focuses on innovation and technology development. He holds a BSc in industrial engineering and management from Clarkson University in New York, an MBA from Clemson University in South Carolina, and a PhD in strategic management from Université de Montréal.

“Mr. Dobson has extensive management skills and business acumen, and I am truly honoured to hold the Dobson Professorship in Innovation and Entrepreneurship,” said Ensign. “Dobson has supported capitalism for so many years, and in so many ways, as an investor, as an advocate, and through efforts targeted at education and appreciation of entrepreneurial activity.”

Today, Ensign is focusing his expertise on mentoring students and young entrepreneurs with their upcoming ventures. His present research is aimed at entrepreneurship in the periphery, in particular, Canada’s far North and among Aboriginal communities. This research parallels what his colleagues are doing in Alaska, Australia, and Scandinavia.

John Dobson is chairman and founder of Formula Growth Ltd., one of Canada’s oldest and most successful investment firms. He established the John Dobson Foundation in 1986 to educate the public regarding free enterprise system and entrepreneurial activities in Canada. The foundation has supported various community entrepreneurial efforts, including The Canadian Institute for Advanced Research and The Youth Employment Services Foundation of Montreal, to name a few.
