WATERLOO – Wilfrid Laurier University has climbed into fifth place in the Primarily Undergraduate section of the rankings of Canadian universities produced annually by Maclean’s magazine. Laurier now ranks first among Ontario universities in this group.

The rankings issue, available on newsstands tomorrow, has Laurier rising from sixth place last year into fifth. It also has Laurier among the top four positions of all subcategories that contribute to a university’s overall reputation.

“Laurier is extremely pleased to have once again finished in fifth place in the overall ranking and to have reclaimed its place in the all-important reputation category,” said Arthur Stephen, vice-president of university advancement. “It’s gratifying to return to the position we held in the late 1990s, before government cutbacks and the double cohort growth put Ontario institutions at a real disadvantage.

Laurier finished in at least the top four of the subcategories that determine the overall reputation rankings. The university ranks fourth in Highest Quality, Leaders of Tomorrow and Most Innovative. It climbed from last year’s fourth place in the Best Overall subcategory to third place.
