Laurier launches Mental Health First Aid training program for faculty and staff

Communications, Public Affairs & Marketing

Jul 17/14

Wilfrid Laurier University will begin offering a new Mental Health First Aid training program to faculty and staff in August.

Mental Health First Aid is a program that improves mental health literacy and will teach faculty and staff how to recognize symptoms of mental health problems, provide initial help and refer students to the appropriate professional services. This program is an important component of Laurierís commitment to enhancing a culture of health and well-being.

ďAt Laurier, the focus on our students has always gone beyond their academic success to encompass their overall well-being,Ē said Max Blouw, president and vice-chancellor. ďPrograms like the Mental Health First Aid training will serve to strengthen this focus. I encourage faculty and staff to take part in the training to enhance the support, care and compassion we extend to our students, and to help create meaningful dialogue around mental health issues.Ē

Over 200 faculty and staff have been identified to participate in the first round of training, based on several criteria, including significant frontline contact with students. In the future, the university hopes to extend this program to others who are interested.

The training will be facilitated at Laurierís Waterloo and Brantford campuses by Laurier faculty and staff, who are certified Mental Health First Aid trainers.

This program was made possible through a grant from the Bell Letís Talk Community Fund, in addition to support from the university.
